Connect to the talker - amber.org.uk 1200.

Tutorial.

If you have read the about page you will now know what a talker is so let's have a go at using one. The following steps will take you through the connection and residency procedure, don't worry if this is new to you, it's all quite painless. If you are fine with talkers then you will know what to do, just go to the telnet section at the bottom of the page if you don't wish to read any further.

  • Connection. You will need to be on-line (of course) and have access to a telnet program of some description. Try clicking here to see if you have a telnet program with which you can connect automatically. If that didn't work then don't worry, look for a telnet program on your system (such as amTelnet) and enter the following information into the relevant boxes. Server: amber.org.uk Port: 1200 now press Open Connection.
  • Logging on. Now you should be faced with a screen of text asking you to enter a name. If you are asked for a password then that name is taken, you will have to try a different name. Once your name is accepted you will be asked a series of questions, answer these as well as you can and just press enter if you don't understand the section on "term type".
  • Talking. After answering all those questions you will find yourself on the talker itself. Try talking to people by using the say command, this will address everybody in the current room. For example say hello folks will print the text "hello folks" on the screens of everybody in the current room. If you wish to address just one person then use the tell command, for example tell ben hello there will print the text "hello there" on just Ben's screen.
  • Residency. Once you have used the talker for a while it's time to decide if will call back again at some point in the future. If you do want to come back then it's a good idea to gain residency so your name can be saved and password protected. To do this you will need to speak with a member of staff and ask them to "res" you. By now a member of staff should have approached you to check up on you anyway, so it's best to ask them to deal with you. If not then just ask everybody in the room if a staff member could help you out with residency. Once you have been granted residency (or "res") then you will need to enter an email address and a password, then your name will be saved. The email address is only required so the administration can contact you if then need should arise.

Congratulations, that's it! You are now a resident and may return to the talker whenever it is available by entering your name and password on the login screen.

Telnet to Amiga Forever.

Below is a telnet link to Amiga Forever, if you are using an Amiga and you don't have a telnet program then there are demo versions of amTelnet on AFCD-16 (-Look_here_1st!-) and CUCD-12 (Netconnect). You could always look at the Amiga page for links to telnet program pages. Telnet should already be included with most other systems.
